The money needed for the essential items on an Easter meal amounts to BGN 110, according to an analysis by the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research, Education and Training (ISTURET) at the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria (CITUB) on the prices of products. Economic analyst at the Institute Petar Mishev provided a brief report for BTA.

Tradition has it that the table should be rich, and Easter is among the most revered holidays by the Bulgarian people. In this regard, the question arises about the necessary resources of a household for its preparation, and what a person who receives a minimum wage can afford.

The first mandatory item are dyed eggs. "The amount to be spent on 30 eggs is about BGN 15, considering they are the smallest size," Mishev noted.

"Of course, there are various knockoffs of this product, but if a Bulgarian household wants to put a decent home-made Easter bread on its table, it should prepare a minimum of 10 BGN per kilogramme," he added.

A symbolic end to the Easter fast comes with lamb.

"Figures show that a kilo of meat averages around BGN 26, with a 12% increase in its retail price compared to the previous Easter. Taking into account that other products are needed to prepare each local dish, the final cost of the main course will rise even further. If a large traditional green salad or a side dish of fresh potatoes is added to the products already listed, the amount will increase even more," the economic analyst said.

According to him, the necessary funds for the listed mandatory elements of the festive meal amount to BGN 110 for the purchase of 2 kg of meat per household. Drinks or sweets are not included in the amount.
